KCB Rally – A blast from the past..
So here I am doodling on my laptop, checked mail, signed into twitter and having all sorts of conversations with mi amigos..when as part of one thread that was doing the rounds on twitter earlier came to mind and it was aptly dubbed under #WeSurvived – A thread that basically recapped what childhood fun and growing up was like in the ’80s through to the early ’90s as a kid in Kenya (particularly Nairobi). It was defo a blast remembering all sorts of shenanigans we did in the name of innocent fun, especially given how far back we were from discovering technology (simple stuff like mobile phones, we had to use phone booths that some idiot had tampered with so he could get away with the few coins you would drop in) and IT was still at it’s infancy.
Long story short, one of the greatest throwbacks for me was the then Safari Rally, an annual affair. Next to attending the annual show, this was the epitome of cool. If you didn’t witness a safari rally car whizz by, you were so uncool, probably dead. Back then the ilk of Patrick Njiru, Juha Kannkunen and the timeless Ian Duncan ruled the circuit. Heck, even we had Jonathan ‘Mtoto ya baba’ Toro, always managing to NOT finish the rally (reminds me of Dick Dastardly and Muttley on ‘Wacky Races’..If ever there’s a movie to be done, that is the chap!..hehehehe)
Anyway here a couple of pics in toast to all those who grew up in that era of unadulterated, simple fun..especially to the safari rally fans. (Stand down, you PlayStation wannabes!)
